- Goats and sheep don’t have teeth on their upper jaw. They have a hard palate that helps them grind their food.
- Goats are great companions for other farm animals, including horses, cows, and chickens.
- The goat is among the cleanest of animals, and is a much more selective feeder than cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and even dogs.
- Goats are great swimmers, although they dislike water and would rather leap over streams and puddles than step in them.
- Some wild goats can climb trees and can walk along a ledge not much wider than a tightrope.
- Goats have rectangular pupils, allowing them to see well in the dark.
- Goats were one of the first animals tamed by humans about 10,000 years ago.
- Goats are in the Bovidae / Capra Hircus family, which includes gazelles, antelopes and buffalo.
- Goats can be taught their name and to come when called.
- They are extremely intelligent and curious.
- Male goats can breed as young as 7 weeks old, so it’s important to remove bucks from females at 7 weeks old in order to avoid breeding.
- Male goats can breed at any time, but they won’t breed just for fun. They will only breed when the female is in “heat”.
- Female goats (called does) go into heat every 21 days and last about 1-3 days.
- Wagging the tail, or bleating for no reason can be signs that the female goat is in heat.
- The goat gestation period is 5 months (roughly 150 days)
- Goats can have anywhere from 1-5 kids in a litter, although the average is 2-3.
- A female goat’s lifespan is around 10-12 years and she can produce babies for as long as she lives, although the old she gets the more complications there can be.
- A doe can definitely get pregnant while she is still lactating.
